The Silver Shantymen sing sea shanties and songs of the sea. Our aim is to practise and perform in an informal, relaxed but serious atmosphere where a balance is maintained between enjoyment and achieving a professional and continuously improving performance. When performed, all the songs in our repertoire are sung unaccompanied and from memory. Newcomers to the group will be given great help and encouragement but they will have to show much personal commitment. They will not be expected to join in performances until they are sufficiently up to speed.
Shantymen recruits will require singing experience but knowledge of the history of the mercantile marine or time spent sailing in a square-rigger are not pre-requisites – a sense of humour, however, is essential.
The Silver Shantymen meet every week at a suitable location in Gateshead
Singers wishing to join should contact us by email or telephone.
